Aloe Vera is a magical plant that has been used in medicines and otherwise to treat a variety of skin, hair and body ailments over hundreds of years. It is readily available in any nursery and very easy to maintain. The gel housing inside the heavy aloe leaves, is rich in nutrients, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. The best way and time to use aloe vera gel is usually when it is freshly extracted from the leaf but as it is extremely potent, we suggest a patch test and some dilution with other effective ingredients for added benefits.
The best part about aloe vera is that you can craft various DIY skin and hair packs with it, within minutes. Let’s learn how to make at least 5 aloe haircare and skincare masks.
1. Aloe Vera + Egg
Loss of skin elasticity and fine lines are something that no one can avoid with age but you can surely slow down skin ageing with this aloe and egg face pack. It tightens the skin, reduces the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines, firms and nourishes the skin. This pack can also be used on your hair to add smoothness and shine.
What you’ll need: 2-3 tablespoons aloe vera gel + Egg
Directions: Break an entire egg into a bowl and whisk it slightly. Add 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and stir the mixture until a bit fluffy. Apply it onto your face and neck with a brush and let it dry. Do not make any facial movements until you rinse it off. Once dry, wash off with lukewarm water and pat your skin with a soft towel.
2. Aloe Vera + Lemon + Yogurt
Summer brings with it a lot of humidity and heat. The soaring temperatures worsen the skin and we often face oily skin. Aloe vera is a great ingredient to soothe the skin and it helps in combating oily skin when mixed with yogurt and lemon. This mask is also helpful in preventing acne and lightens dark spots.
What you’ll need: 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel, 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 2 teaspoons of plain yogurt.
Directions: Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl until it is slightly runny but consistent enough to apply. Apply with a brush onto your face and neck for 15-20 minutes and rinse off with tap water.
3. Aloe Vera + Coconut Oil
Aloe and coconut, both, are great hair moisturisers. While aloe soothes the scalp, coconut oil strengthens the root and adds moisture to it for healthy hair growth. It hydrates the scalp, stimulates growth and curbs hair fall as well. Using this hair pack twice a week is a great way to boost your hair growth and multiply the strength.
What you’ll need: 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel, 1½ tablespoons coconut oil and 1-2 drops of essential oil (optional)
Directions: Mix the aloe vera gel and warm coconut oil in a bowl. Stir well until the mixture is runny. Pour it in a spray bottle and apply on the scalp and tresses. Let the mixture sit for at least 20-30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as usual.
4. Aloe Vera + Green Tea
Green tea is a great source of antioxidants that prevents the body from catching any infections and that’s what it does when applied topically as well. This aloe vera and green tea hair pack is perfect for deep cleansing your scalp, getting rid of the build-up and shielding it from any kind of bacterial infections.
What you’ll need: 1/3rd cup brewed green tea and 3 tablespoons of aloe vera gel.
Directions: Mix both the ingredients and blend it until runny. Pour it into a spray bottle and apply on your scalp and massage for a few minutes. Massaging your scalp with this hair pack on will help it penetrate deep into the roots and kill any germs while nourishing and conditioning the hair. Wait for about 15 minutes and wash it off.
5. Aloe Vera + Onion Juice
Yes, it sure sounds like a stink alert but you’ll know the worth of 30 minutes of patience just as you read on. Just like aloe vera gel, onion juice is a wondrous ingredient that helps in hair growth even at bald spots and patches, owing to the sulphur content in it. It is filled with nutrients that help in hair growth and when mixed with aloe vera, it acts as an even better moisturizer and stimulator.
What you’ll need: 1/3rd cup onion juice and 3 tablespoons aloe vera gel.
Directions: Mix the ingredients well in a bowl until it’s lump-free. Apply the mixture all over your hair and cover it with a shower cap to avoid the strong smell. Though aloe vera cancels out the strong smell to an extent, it is better to be safe. Let the mixture sit for at least 30 minutes to an hour and shampoo as usual
